Today in the guest chair, we have Dr. Mariel Buquè.

Dr. Mariel Buquè is an AfroLatina, a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University. Her work focuses on the advancement of culturally responsive clinical care and healing wounds of intergenerational trauma.

She focuses her free time delivering racial healing workshops through her Patreon community and conducting mental health and anti-racism workshops across the nation.

She believes in the liberation of our minds as a necessary quality of our overall wellness and liberation.

Overwhelm can make you shut down and not do anything. It’s a part of the flight, fight, or freeze.

Instead of freezing, try:
📍Prioritizing

Focus on the most critical tasks and let go of non-urgent ones.

📍Breaking Tasks Down
Divide big tasks into smaller, manageable steps.

📍Practicing Self-Care
Get enough sleep, eat balanced meals, and make time to recharge.

📍Seeking Support
Talk to friends, family, or a therapist to share the load and gain perspective.

Remember, feeling overwhelmed is a signal from your body and mind that you need to pause, regroup, and adjust your approach. Take it one step at a time.

Accepting compliments and good news requires vulnerability, as it involves acknowledging one’s strengths or achievements. For those with anxiety, this openness can feel risky, as they may fear judgment, rejection, or failure if they show confidence.

📍Physical Symptoms of Anxiety

Anxiety triggers a fight-or-flight response, leading to physiological responses like increased tension and alertness. Compliments or good news may feel almost jarring in this heightened state, making it difficult to internalize.

We create boundaries and walls to protect ourselves from things that we don’t like. The difference is walls tend to be built when we’re trying to deeply control something and boundaries are created as a form of self-care to communicate realistic expectations.

Building a wall might sound like:
📍 I don’t trust anyone.
📍 I don’t need anyone to help me. I can do it all myself.

Creating boundaries might sound like:
📍 I can only stay for an hour
📍 I really can’t talk about that right now. It isn’t the right time.
